School Safety
Every young person in this country has to attend the three mandatory levels of education. These levels include elementary, middle, and high school. Children and teenagers are attending these schools in the hopes of learning the next steps and preparing for adulthood. This can be difficult when kids don’t feel safe at their school.
Bullying is the most common form of violence kids receive at school. This interaction between students is often caused when someone stronger or bigger teases the smaller individual. This is a very harmful thing to the individual and can impact their mental health. Bullying mostly happens in middle and high school. It occurs in these two levels the most since this is the time kids and teenagers are starting the journey of what kind of adults they are going to become in the future. Bullying is not being taken seriously in schools regardless of the damage it causes to the students. Teachers need to be more cautious and observant while walking the halls of the school or teaching a specific class.
Vaping and smoking is another issue that most high schools face in my neighborhood. Teenagers and young adults are vaping and smoking in the school bathrooms or by staircases with little to no traffic of students or teachers. The school’s unpleasant smell of different fumes and fluids can cause a big distraction to the students while trying to learn. Closing certain bathrooms or trying to teach kids the negative aspects of vaping and smoking at such a young age will not change much. Teenagers at this age care more about being “cool” and fitting in, for example. If somebody you know vapes or smokes - you are bound to try it once or twice - this is where people stumble. Students usually take a puff or two and slowly start to do it more frequently. They eventually became addicted and began the process all over again.
Managing a school is very difficult and can be frustrating at times - but there are ways to prevent them from happening. Schools should have more staff on patrol and access to bathrooms in case of emergencies. School should be a place where you feel safe - not threatened.
