Homelessness
Homelessness occurs in every part of the world and is an ongoing issue in many cities today - just like Toronto. Toronto’s homeless population has been rapidly increasing every day which causes the problem to grow. The issue has gotten out of hand in our city and has become extremely difficult to manage. We need to take action into our own hands and take responsibility for the wellness of our city.
Have you ever wondered why people become homeless? What brings people into a certain amount of desperation to do certain things? Have you ever questioned yourself about what you- as an individual - can do to help the less fortunate? These are the questions you should consider when discussing topics such as these.
There are many ways people or life events can lead to homelessness. The most common reason tends to be affordability. This can mean people cannot afford to pay their rent, lose their jobs, or have been evicted from their residences. Housing prices have been rapidly increasing in Toronto and houses are becoming ridiculously expensive to own nowadays - this is a big issue. When housing prices go up, people's monthly bills and mortgages increase too. This means people are less likely to be able to afford their current house and choose to spend their money on groceries and necessities they need to physically stay alive. This is how people get evicted.
Pedestrians as well as drivers have surely observed or seen the homeless situation downtown where there is filthiness around the center areas of our city. Homeless people have to buy tents for housing, dumpster diving for food, and rain for fresh clean water. Many people who live under these circumstances tend to do drugs and inject various substances into their bodies. While some people might think of this as just an addiction - it is also a way for them to relax and forget about the reality of their situation. Even though many homeless people do these certain things, it does not necessarily mean every homeless person does. Stereotyping these people, judging them and criticizing them will only hold them back instead of pushing them forward.
There are many things you can do as a citizen of Toronto to prevent or limit the homeless population in Toronto. The easiest way to help is by charity. Many different websites and charities exist online which are put in place to help the homeless. These donations usually go towards building homeless shelters and providing food and clothes. A different approach would be donating these supplies yourself. Homeless shelters require supplies and an extreme amount of help. Most people tend to donate old clothes, nonperishable food items, and cleaning supplies. All these items make a difference and you should never feel shame or embarrassment for helping out the less fortunate.
Toronto is a city full of love and compassion but it is also a city with many issues that are not being addressed by enough people. Instead of criticizing and judging the people in need - you should help them out and give them motivation to continue.
